Many of us slightly older folk will still remember the humble floppy disk which was the computing industries first real mobile storage media for the mainstream user and when first introduced was an ideal way of transferring data across computers, as long as you did not mind formatting the disk or re-writing it a number of times because of corruption on the first few attempts.

USB 1.0 which was first introduced in 1996 was still an emerging standard so if we had a larger file we had to span the data across many floppies which I remember was a real pain at the time.

But as computing power grew at a fast pace the size of files seemed to grow exponentially and the floppy drive was simply not up to the job meaning many people were left having to burn very expensive CD’s as burning technology came into play in the nick of time.

USB was making rapid gains fortunately and manufacturers were coming up with many new uses for this very user friendly (operating system permitting) plug and play capability, and the pen drive was borne not a moment to soon in my opinion. Mobile data transfer capacity rocketed upwards from a humble 2mb and it did not seem too long until the capacity of USB pen drives surpassed that of the CD.

The computer repair and IT industries where some of the first serious adopters of pen drives primarily due to the fact that system tools could be easily carried on a flash drive and with the larger capacities reduced the need to carry around a number of CD disks used for diagnostics or computer maintenance utilities.

As capacities grew though faster data transfer speeds were needed and this led to the emergence of the second generation of USB …USB 2.0.

The emergence of USB 2.0 and hi speed USB was a bit of a debacle for many consumers however as many USB pen drives and PCI cards were sold at the time claiming to be USB 2.0 but it was not made clear that the devices still only had the transfer speeds of 12mbps as opposed to 480 mbps.The problem was so widespread that many countries trading standards bodies were involved due to consumer lobbying for clearer packaging.

All of that seems lost in the past know as the standard has emerged and is widely accepted by many as the de facto transfer protocol although the firewire camp would disagree but as technology matures time will tell.

The USB pen drive has really risen to the challenge to take advantage of the USB interface and storage capacities are enormous and far beyond most peoples requirements, What were almost in the beginning icons of your technical prowess have now become a mainstream device and sales are said to exceed 150 million units per year just for pen drives alone. The USB interface is also said to be present in over 6 billion consumers devices and this number is growing at over 30% per annum.

Text-Mode Displays Invalid Partitions

In Windows, a special session manger called Usetup.exe starts a mini-kernel mode phase, which is referred as text-mode phase of Setup. This phase is responsible for checking the system for basic hardware installed, creating file systems and registry and partitioning and formatting the drive for file systems. It also examines the hard disk for integrity. One of the peculiar symptoms that it shows while partition table is corrupted (specifically in Windows 2000) is when you try to upgrade your system; it displays few partitions that actually don’t exist on the hard disk. Since the partition table is damaged, you cannot access your data, thus require restoring from backup. But availability of valid and complete data backup is not must in all cases. Therefore, you should use data recovery software. to successfully scan and recover the lost information.

When you try to install Windows 2000 SP3 using Windows 2000 SP3 CD-ROM in text-mode setup, you observe that setup shows some partitions that actually don’t exist on hard disk. When you select a partition, its related options appear in its status bar at the bottom of screen. But if you select such non-existing partition, you don’t see the Delete option to delete it.

Cause

Windows 2000 setup is unable to read partition table information because it is corrupted. The similar behavior can also be seen on new hard disks that have not been partitioned yet.

Solution

To correct this issue, you need to repartition the hard disk and restore lost data from backup. You can repartition the hard disk using any of the below mentioned method:

  • Use different version of Windows 2000 CD-ROM to start your system and use Delete option after selecting each of the listed partition
  • You can also use Windows 2000 Setup boot floppy disk for this purpose
  • Boot your system using startup disk and use Fdisk utility to repartition the hard disk

You can continue installing Windows 2000 SP3 Setup after restoring lost information using backup. This has been assumed that you have backed up all the important data to restore it later. When it comes to a computer, there is so much basic computer terminology like RAM, megahertz, gigabytes, etc. that people can find confusingthat can confuse people and leave them asking questions like “What is RAM?”, “What is a hard drive?”.

Having a better understanding of some of these terms can help empower you with computers, helping you get better at them more easily.

A lot of people I talk to seem to be apologetic about their lack of knowledge. It’s too bad people feel that way; they really shouldn’t.

What I tell them is that while they may not know as much as I do about computers, it’s not their fault, and they probably know about stuff I don’t know much about. All you need is someone who takes the time to explain things to you in a way that makes sense.

One term many people confuse is memory (also known as RAM), and hard drive storage space.

RAM stands for Random Access Memory (it’s OK, there won’t be a test). It is a temporary working space the computer uses to get work done, which gets emptied when the computer is turned off.

Think of it like a work bench or table. You have a project you’re working on and you do your project on the bench and when you’re done, you tidy it all up.

The hard drive is the main place your computer uses to store information. It looks like a rectangular metal box about 3.5″ wide (or 2.5″ on a laptop), which contains a non-removable disk. It is the disk inside the drive which stores everything.

Think of it as a cupboard where you store the tools or materials for your project — when you want to work on something you choose the things you need from the cupboard, put them on the bench and work on the project.

This is like when you run a program; the computer loads the program from the hard drive into memory.

So the larger the space, the more you can store — i.e. the more programs you can have installed, the more songs or pictures or videos you can save on your computer.

Many people accidentally call their computer (the big box-like thing hooked up to the screen) a hard drive, but this is based on a misunderstanding. Both RAM and the hard drive are parts located inside of the computer, and most people never actually see these parts.

Most people who have a fairly new computer have much more space than they’ll ever have any hope of filling. Not many ever fill them up, unless they are downloading a lot of larger files like music or pictures, or especially video files. Saving a complete movie on your computer can really eat up space very quickly.

If someone tells you need more memory, or or you get an error message about being low on memory, this usually means you don’t have enough RAM. This can slow your computer down drastically.

Think of the table idea again: if your table is very small, you can’t fit everything you need on it to get your work done, so you’re constantly wasting time moving stuff off and back onto the bench to get your work done, if you can work at all.

Both RAM and hard drive space are measured with the same terms: kilobytes (KB), megabytes (MB), and gigabytes (GB). This may be one reason people confuse the two words.

So why is it that you buy a computer one year that has a lot of RAM, and two or three years go by, why do people tell you you don’t have enough RAM? This is because each year the average size of software, and the amount of memory it needs, gets larger.

It’s as if the tools you use on your workbench keep growing every year so you eventually have to get a larger bench.

If your computer seems to be running more slowly recently, or you’ve been having odd errors, it could be that you need to add more RAM, which doesn’t cost much to do and can add life to your computer. It’s not a cure-all for a slow computer, but it can help.

Remember, basic computer lingo doesn’t have to be baffling, just as long as the explanation makes sense!
